FAQS: EV / Hybrid Servicing & Maintenance

We have answered our most commonly asked questions about EV cars and hybrid cars. If you have any questions, or would like to book your car into our garage, get in touch today!

Do electric and hybrid cars need regular servicing?

Yes! While EVs have fewer moving parts than traditional petrol or diesel vehicles, they still require regular servicing to maintain battery health, braking performance, cooling systems, and overall efficiency. Hybrids also need engine servicing alongside their electric components.

How often should I service my EV or hybrid?

Most manufacturers recommend servicing your EV or hybrid once a year or every 10,000–20,000 miles, depending on usage. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance, efficiency, and longevity.

Do EVs and hybrids need MOTs?

Yes, electric and hybrid vehicles still require annual MOT testing after three years, just like petrol and diesel cars. While EVs don’t require emissions checks, other essential components such as brakes, suspension, tyres, and lights must meet safety standards.

What are common issues with EVs and hybrids?

Common issues include battery degradation, charging system faults, and regenerative braking problems. Regular servicing helps prevent these issues and detect faults early, saving you money on costly repairs.

Does my Tesla need an MOT?

Yes, like all cars, Teslas require an MOT after three years to ensure they meet road safety standards. While EVs don’t need emissions tests, other key components such as tyres, suspension, brakes, and lights must be inspected.

Can MC AutoCare service my Tesla?

Yes! We offer specialist servicing, repairs, and diagnostics for Teslas using advanced tools and EV expertise to keep your car running at its best.

What are common issues with Audi and Volkswagen EVs?

Common issues include battery degradation, software malfunctions, charging system faults, and cooling system failures. Regular servicing helps detect and fix these issues early, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.

Can MC AutoCare service my electric Audi or Volkswagen?

Absolutely! We specialise in servicing and repairing all Audi and Volkswagen EVs, including the Audi e-tron range, VW ID series, and plug-in hybrid models. Our expertise ensures your vehicle remains safe, efficient, and roadworthy.

What is the difference between a hybrid and an electric car?

A hybrid car has both a petrol/diesel engine and an electric motor, working together to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can be charged like an EV and run on electricity alone for short distances.

An electric vehicle (EV) runs purely on electricity, using a battery and electric motor instead of a combustion engine. EVs must be charged using a home charger or public charging station.

Do hybrids and EVs require different servicing?

Yes. Hybrids require engine maintenance alongside battery and electric motor servicing, while EVs mainly need checks on the battery, cooling system, brakes, and software. Both types benefit from regular expert servicing to maintain efficiency and longevity.

Which brands offer hybrid and electric models?

Most manufacturers now offer hybrids and EVs. Audi and Volkswagen have popular models like the Audi e-tron, Q4 e-tron, A3 TFSI e, and Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, and Golf GTE. Other brands include Tesla, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. At MC Autocare, we can look after your electric vehicle.

Are hybrids or EVs more expensive to maintain?

EVs typically have lower maintenance costs because they have fewer moving parts and don’t require oil changes or engine servicing. However, battery repairs or replacements can be costly. Hybrids have more components (engine + electric motor), so they require more maintenance over time.
